Ah, the Mediterranean. Beautiful beaches, wonderful cultures, and most of all, unforgettable food! With the rise of cardiovascular disease and diabetes in the United States, more attention is being given to what is termed the Mediterranean diet. Studies have shown that this type of eating along with the activities of people indigenous to this region, have tremendous positive health effects.
What are the benefits? First and foremost, this type of diet lowers your risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. It also is packed full of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that are important in keeping us healthy for a much longer period of time. This way of living promotes a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish and seafood with a limitation being placed on red meat and unhealthy fat intake. Also, it incorporates an active, stress-reduced lifestyle that is beneficial to everyone.
Every meal is based on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, nuts, beans, legumes, seeds, herbs and spices. Using this basis, fish and seafood are consumed often, at least twice a week with poultry, eggs, cheese, and yogurt being eaten in moderate portions daily to weekly. Also, red wine may be consumed in small portions to enjoy the health benefits and antioxidants that are packed in each sip. Along with the diet, time with family and friends in a leisurely atmosphere are recommended again to fend off the daily stresses that life may bring. Also, daily exercise doing something you enjoy is recommended to help utilize this new found way of eating to its fullest.
