Chiropractic for More than Just Pain?

Chiropractic for More than Just Pain ?

When a new patient walks into our office, they are often seeking out care for a specific health problem such as neck or low back pain. But chiropractic can be used for more than an acute injury or pain. It is also extremely useful in preventing injury and more importantly, maintaining wellness. Chiropractic wellness care consists of regular, periodic adjustments and treatments in order to help prevent the onset of many common disorders and ailments.

The wellness principle and chiropractic in general, is based on the fact that our entire body is controlled by our brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nervous system. Our nervous system controls the health of everything from our smallest blood cells to organs like our heart, lungs, and intestines. So it makes sense that if our nervous system is not healthy, our bodies are not healthy. Joint fixations, in our spine or extremities, cause the communication between the nervous system and the rest of our body to not function properly.

When this communication is affected, it can cause the onset of many common health issues. Osteoarthritis, headaches, and sinus congestion are just some of the many disorders that can take place. Chiropractic adjust-ments remove the joint fixations and allow our bodies to maintain proper health. Also, if you have received previous care for an acute injury or illness, regular wellness adjustments will help you maintain the level of health and recovery that you have achieved from your previous treatments. So use chiropractic for more than just pain. Use it to live a healthy, well-balanced life!

Kids Health Corner

Kids Health Corner

When kids enter daycare or school for the first time, many seem to constantly be sick. Germs are everywhere, from toys to desks, to other kids. However, allowing your child to be adjusted regularly can help ease the symptoms or even prevent the onset of many upper respiratory infections. Cervical spine dysfunctions prevent proper lymphatic drainage through the deep cervical lymph nodes. By slowing this drainage, bacteria cannot be rapidly cleared and predisposes kids to common childhood illnesses such as tonsillitis, sinus infections, otitis media (ear infection), common colds, and bronchitis. Cervical adjustments help restore this drainage allowing the lymphatic system to filter bacteria and viruses from our kids’ bodies, keeping them healthier. Give your children the gift of better health!

All About Plantar Fasciitis

The inflammation of the thick connective tissue on the bottom of your feet is called plantar fasciitis.

It extends from the calcaneous (heel) of the foot to each individual
toe while creating the arches of our foot.  This condition has become very common in recent years due to a variety of factors.  The most common are flat or high arches, running on surfaces that are uneven, tight calf musculature (back of the lower part of the leg), quick weight gain, and choosing to wear shoes with little or no arch support (think high heels for the ladies and sandals for the guys).  Also, heel spurs (extra bone that grows as a result of too much stress being placed on a particular area or bone) can be a common cause of this condition.
Many symptoms typically found with this inflammatory issue include foot pain upon walking when waking up in the morning, pain caused when walking up stairs or after intense activities such as running or aerobic exercises.

A good examination and health history can help diagnose this condition in most people.  At times when heel spurs may be suspected, foot x-rays can provide confirmation as to the cause of the issue at hand.  Conservative treatment works very well for plantar fasciitis.  Chiropractic adjustments of the foot and ankle complex, soft tissue modalities such as Graston Technique, as well as therapeutic ultrasound help restore normal function to the foot and help ease the inflammatory process.  At-home care can consist of icing the bottom of the foot to minimize pain and inflammation as well as stretching and strengthening specific muscle groups of the lower body to prevent further flare-ups of this problem.

If you are having foot issues, please let Dr. Kmett know so that he may help you on your road to recovery!

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

Do you have trouble holding onto your cup of coffee?  Does your hand just seem to not do what you want it to do?  If so, you may have a condition called cubital tunnel syndrome.  This syndrome is caused by pressure being placed on the ulnar nerve as it passes through the elbow at the medial epicondyle.  If there is habitual pressure placed on that aspect of the elbow while at work, typing, or even constant trauma, symptoms such as numbness, tingling, and pain may develop.  These symptoms can begin to affect the elbow, forearm, wrist, hand, or fingers.

A thorough musculoskeletal exam can help in diagnosing this syndrome.  Often, a nerve conduction test can be performed to confirm the diagnosis and establish the severity of the issue.  In order to treat this problem conservatively, activity modifications should be made initially.  A person should avoid leaning on their elbows as well as avoiding placing their elbows on hard surfaces for an extended time.

Splinting can be used to keep the elbow in a straightened position at night to avoid irritating the area.  Chiropractic adjustments of the elbow complex are used to mobilize the joint to create better motion within the joint.  Also, various soft tissue modalities such as Graston Technique can be utilized to release tension that may be on the ulnar nerve due to thicker connective tissue and tight musculature.

Feng Wins King of the Mountains Jersey at Taiwan

getimage

Champion System Pro Cycling Team's Chun Kai Feng took home top honors in the king of the mountains classification Sunday at the Tour de Taiwan after securing and protecting the jersey since Friday's Stage 5.
Champion System Assistant Director Chris Wherry said he was proud of the team's overall effort to preserve the jersey in a race that saw Zach Bell win Stage 4 and teammate Adiq Othman earn four top five finishes, including fifth on the final stage.
"I am very pleased for the team," Wherry said. "Especially for Zach's stage win and Kai's KOM jersey."
With no categorized climbs on the final stage, a 58-kilometer circuit race through Taipei City, as Feng needed only to finish the race to secure the jersey. When a breakaway failed to materialize, the intermediate sprints turned into field sprints. Othman took third in the first and was runner-up on the second.
Rain started to fall as the peloton hit the final lap, and what looked to be a perfect lead out by Champion System for Fabian Schnaidt was ruined in a crash with two corners to go.
"I'm very bummed at the lost opportunity," Schnaidt said. "I thought I was going to have a great finish."
Hayato Yoshida (Shimano Racing Team) took the win ahead of Benjamin Giraud (Team La Pomme Marsielle). Othman's fifth place added to his fourth on Stage 3, fifth on Stage 5 and third on Stage 6. He finished the race as Champion System's best-placed rider overall in 11th, 47 seconds behind winner Bernard Sulzberger (DRAPAC Cycling).
